Admiral gets shipshape with 751 new recruits in the first half of 2010

With unemployment figures at their highest since 1994 not many companies have good news regarding recruitment. But one company is bucking the trend and has already recruited 490 people this year and plans to take on a further 261 by the end of June.

Car insurance group Admiral has had a phenomenal year so far; in March it announced a record turnover for the previous year of more than £1billion and it has recently broken the 2 millionth customer mark. To serve all those additional customers the company has had to recruit extra employees which will mean the staff base will have grown by 11% in the first half of 2010.

Admiral Group includes a number of well known insurance brands including, Diamond and as well as Admiral. It is Wales’ only FTSE100 company with offices in Cardiff, Swansea and Newport.

Admiral People Services Manager, Ceri Assiratti, said, “Wales has been hit particularly badly in this recession and unemployment in the principality stands at 9%; a 15 year high. So we’re delighted to be bucking the trend and are able to take on so many new members of staff in a difficult time.

“We are lucky to be in the business we are, car insurance is a compulsory purchase so is not badly affected by recession.”

Admiral Group has consistently been named as one the UK’s best employers. It has been listed in the Best Companies list every year since the list was launched in 2000 and has done the same in the Great Place to Work Institute’s list of Great Workplaces since 2001. Both lists are compiled based on surveys of company employees.

The company has a philosophy that people who like what they do, do it better. It has a Ministry of Fun to organise fun events inside and outside of work, free fruit to encourage healthy eating and a free share scheme which offers at least £3,000 worth of free shares to every member of staff, every year. Since the company floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2005 it has awarded 3.5million shares to staff*, with a total value of £45million at today’s share price**.

Admiral has such a good reputation as a company that looks after its staff, its employees often encourage family members to apply for jobs with the company. Angela MacDonald has worked at Admiral since January 2000; in November 2001 her daughter Donna joined the company. Both work in the company’s New Business department in Swansea.

Angela said, “The people are the best part of working for Admiral. It’s just such a lovely atmosphere, I can’t imagine working any place else. The day I took the job I knew I’d never need to take another job, I’d be here until I retire.”

Donna said, “My Mum recommended I apply to work for Admiral, since then I’ve never woken up once and not wanted to come to work. When I started with Admiral I was only 19 and had a six-month-old son, but didn’t own my own house. Now I’ve not only got a job I love and can rely on but also a house and car.”
