Admiral grads get running shoes on to help raise vital funds for hospice

More than 140 Admiral staff have signed up to run the Admiral City of Newport Half Marathon this Sunday (18th March 2018).

It’s the 5th year the Newport employer has sponsored the event, which is run by St David’s Hospice Care, and each year Admiral employees have taken part.

Arianne Weekes and Sophia Miller from Admiral’s Graduate Programme have signed up to run for the first time.  Arianne is a novice runner, having taken part in a few 10k runs but Sophia had no running experience before starting training for the event.

Sophia explains why they were keen to take part, “We were looking to raise some money for a good cause and when we saw Admiral was sponsoring the half marathon again which raises vital funds for the hospice, it seemed like the natural thing to do.

“It was also brilliant motivation to do something challenging and improve our fitness, and we signed up shortly after starting the graduate scheme so it’s been a great bonding experience. “

The pair are looking forward to the event and feeling well prepared.  They have trained by joining a local running club and go running with them twice a week. They’ve also done a number of park runs and have practiced two half marathons along the Taff Trail.

So far, Arianne and Sophia have raised £155 for St David’s through donations from colleagues in Admiral, friends and family.

Arianne “We wanted to raise money for St David’s as well as take part in the race as it’s such a wonderful cause. Hospices do important work, and although I don’t have experience with St David’s specifically, my granddad was well looked after by a hospice and it’s good to give back a little.”

Christine Vorres, St David’s Hospice Care said, “All of the event team at St David’s Hospice Care see Admiral’s support for the Newport Half as critical to its success. For the last five years the staff at Admiral have taken the event to heart, helping and supporting in many ways. To have staff actually taking part means a lot to us. Good luck to all of Team Admiral on Sunday.”

Admiral is also providing performers from local circus NoFit State, who will be entertaining spectators along the route.
