Admiral marks the start of construction of new Cardiff HQ

South Wales-based Admiral Group has taken a major step forward in the construction of its new headquarters in Cardiff city centre, with a ceremony to turn the first sod on the scheme.

Admiral CEO Henry Engelhardt was joined by Tony Nash, Director of the developer Stoford and Hector McAlpine from the construction company Sir Robert McAlpine Limited to mark the occasion.

Also on site were nine of Admiral’s longest serving members of staff who joined the company on its first day of business in January 1993.

Admiral’s new headquarters is the biggest ever pre-let office scheme in Cardiff, and is being built on the site of the former David Street car park behind St David’s shopping centre.

The 220,00sq ft, 11-story building is scheduled for completion in March 2014 and will allow Admiral to potentially increase its number of staff in the Capital to 3,000 in a single location.

Henry Engelhardt said: “Over the past 20 years Admiral has enjoyed many landmark occasions but today is particularly special.

“I am delighted that so many members of staff who joined the company on day one are here to help us celebrate the start of construction of what will be our stunning new headquarters.

“Employees have been consulted throughout the design process so I am confident it will be a building we can all be very proud of.”

Stoford Director Tony Nash said: “The building has been designed to meet the very latest standards for sustainability and efficiency, is close to all the city centre amenities and has excellent access for public transport. We are confident it will be regarded as one of the best places to work in Cardiff.”
