Admiral’s momentous move begins
Starting this week, local employer Admiral is moving 2,400 members of staff into its new Cardiff headquarters, Tŷ Admiral.
Admiral has had its headquarters in Wales since its launch in 1993. Starting with only 57 members of staff, the company now has over 7000 staff worldwide and 4 million customers. It moved from premises on Newport Road to Capital Tower in 1999.
Planning for the new building started in 2009 and the building has been completed on budget with the moves beginning as schedule at the start of the construction process. Each week a new group of staff will be moved from Capital Tower and two other buildings in Cardiff city centre, with all staff moved into the new building by Christmas 2014.
Tŷ Admiral is the biggest pre-let office project ever seen in Wales’ capital city and Admiral will lease the building for 25 years. It is 220,000sq ft in size and has 11 floors with a capacity for 3,000 people and took two years, four months to build from ground break to practical completion.
The building is close to Cardiff’s two city centre rail stations and the bus station, and is within easy reach of local amenities. It also has an accessible roof terrace and a ‘Get Ready’ room for staff to use for nights out, plus dedicated, secure cycle storage with staff showers and lockers.
Some interesting Tŷ Admiral facts:
- It has approximately 550 floor-to-ceiling windows.
- It will take 12 weekends and almost 9,000 crates to move everyone to the new building.
- It contains approximately 300km of wiring.
- The air handling units (chillers) are the size of a double decker bus.
- The back-up generator is the size of a large mini bus.
- The development includes 3 retail units of mixed use.
- It is a BREEAM Excellent rated building.
- Natural daylight and excellent acoustics to provide an outstanding working environment.
- Tŷ Admiral means Admiral House in Welsh.
