Admiral staff get their running shoes on for Newport Half
More than 100 members of staff at Welsh employer Admiral have so far signed up to run the City of Newport Half Marathon.
Admiral’s back on board for the second year as sponsor for the event, organised by St David’s Hospice Care, which takes place on Sunday 1st March 2015.
30 members of staff from the Newport office have signed up, along with 60 from Cardiff and a further 17 from Swansea.
Lauren Challenger from the Newport Claims department was not an experienced runner when she signed up to run the Newport Half Marathon in 2014 and will be taking on the challenge again in 2015.
She said, “I signed up to run the Newport Half Marathon 2014 with other members of my team. I was definitely not a runner but wanted a challenge and thought it would be a great opportunity to raise money for charity as well. It wasn't until I started training for the event that I realised exactly what I had taken on!
“However I kept up my training and to my surprise made it all the way to the finish line which gave me an amazing sense of achievement. If you had asked me straight after the event, I probably would have said I never wanted to run again, however I have kept it up and taken part in smaller running events. When I saw Admiral were sponsoring it again, I just had to sign up and I hope to finish in a faster time than last year!”.
Kris Broome, Director of Fundraising & Lottery for St David’s Hospice Care said, “We are delighted to have Admiral back on board as main sponsor for 2015.
"As a partner, it has clear criteria when supporting community events and is keen for its staff to be involved and engaged in the events and projects it supports. Our half marathon event is a clear fit in that Admiral staff not only take part as competitors but also help out on the day as volunteer marshals and support staff to ensure the smooth running of the event.
"It is a partnership working across the board that allows us to be have confidence that the Admiral City of Newport Half Marathon will develop and grow year on year”.
30 members of Admiral staff took part in the race in 2014 whilst a number also volunteered as finish line marshals.
