Cwmbran theatre group shoot for the stars

Local employer, Admiral has provided funding to Cwmbran All Starz enabling the group to purchase equipment essential for their public performances and shows.

Alex Mayes, who works in Admiral’s Pricing department, applied to the company’s Community Chest scheme on behalf of the musical theatre group which provides acting, singing and dancing training for young people aged 9 to 19 years of age.

Cwmbran All Starz is a voluntary organisation that welcomes young people from all backgrounds and abilities with the aim of building confidence and social skills through being onstage or helping backstage with different aspects of musical theatre.

Alex, his partner and his partner’s mother have volunteered with the group for 18 months assisting during performances.

He said, “I’ve helped out at three shows doing a variety of roles including looking after props and helping the performers get ready. I’ve seen firsthand how much the young people get from being involved and I knew the group, which is dependent on donations, grants and fundraising, needed money for equipment such as microphones, lights and speakers.

“I was aware of the Community Chest scheme in work and I was delighted when I was able to secure funding for the group so they can continue doing the amazing work that they do.”

Cwmbran All Starz is run by husband and wife team Nigel and Joyce Levi. The group rehearses every Friday and puts on three one-night shows each year. The new equipment purchased with the money from Admiral will particularly help a number of members who are on the autistic spectrum and require extra support.

Joyce Levi explains, “We are always striving to make the best use of the equipment we have, or that we have to hire.  We are so grateful for this donation as it will allow us to purchase a better specification of equipment enabling more consistency when our young members perform.

“From what we have seen with these young people it is clear that anything that assists them with their performance and confidence whilst on stage, improves their experience not just on stage but in their lives generally.  This has been evidenced by the feedback we receive from parents, grandparents, and others who know these young people and the way they’ve changed since becoming part of the company.”

Admiral’s Community Chest scheme has been running for over ten years and gives thousands of pounds annually to local charities and organisations in South Wales that its staff or their families are involved in.
